Our
Centenary weekend of trials at
Chalfont St Peter.

This year, the Berkhamsted Motorcycle
& Car club celebrated its Centenary. To mark this occasion,
the club staged a number of special events which included, Trials,
Grass Track & Motocross. Of particular interest to Trials
riders was the weekend event at Chalfont St Peter, near Rickmansworth,
in July.
Saturday 12th July 2008, The club is ran it’s
annual Charity Trial. This was an event which is designed to
be challenging yet fun, with the hazards set out firmly but
with the emphasis on low scores and smiles all round. Proceeds
from this event are put towards a national or International
charitable cause and in recent years, the club have supported
‘Riders for Health’ in Africa and the St Francis
Hospice in Berkhamsted. This year and for the first time, the
event was run over 4 laps of 10 sections, each section will
be fully observed and Punch Cards will be in use. Also a first,
this year teams of 3 riders on the Hard (Expert) route can be
entered. They were fighting for a one off trophy and each of
the top 3 finishers in all classes received a medallion.
A results tent was set up at the mid point of the course and
riders dropped off their punch cards at the end of each lap
and then collect new ones.
As each rider finished a lap, Alan Roe and his merry band of
helpers added up the marks and projected them onto the screen
outside the tent.
This allowed the riders and spectators to see who was doing
well and not so well and it encouraged the teams and supporters
to get behind their riders and add vocal support! Fancy dress
for the teams was optional but team T’Shirts were certainly
welcome.
A 10.30 start and a limit of 120 rider’s meant that you
needed to enter soon as this event filled up.
There was the usual supply of fresh burgers and sausages with
plenty of soft drinks to wash them down. The results were announced
about 1 hour after the trial had finished, and the presentations
took place on the purpose built rostrum supplied by Ray Timberlake.
There was a conducted short course for the Youth D classes who
normally miss out and our own Bob Secombs was managing that.
Car park control was being managed by Mike Dunks and his gang
of four and the officials included Ian Reynolds & Terry
Golds as Clerks & assistant clerks over the 2 days with
Pete Weight & Alan Roe dealing with management and results.
Sunday 13th July and the event took on a different
feel. Overnight, a much harder’ Super Expert’ route
was added in by Ray Haslam and Clerk of the Course, Stuart Robinson
from the North Berks Motorcycle Club, who had kindly agreed
to officiate for this event. Riding in the event was James Dabill,
sam Haslam, Steve Saunders although Alexz Wigg was out because
of leg injury.
