South
Midland centre expert champions 1936 to Present
John Lee has won the series more than any other ride in the
centres history a total of ten times! Adrian Haslam won it five
times in a row from 1976/77 , no one has done that since. Chris
Koch was just out of schoolboys when he won it in 1981/2 . David
Rolls is the only one to have approached John Lee`s record ten
wins, J.H “Jacko” Wright was John Lee`s grandfather.
Late in the 90`s the series changed to include
riders from other centres, they could score points in the championship
provided they entered under
a South Midland club. Incredibly Chris Koch in 2010 some twenty
nine years after his first championship win took the win that
went down to the last round.Chaz Lee, youngest son of John Lee,
becomes the first of the sons to follow in his farthers boots
by taking the crown in 2011.
Recorded and complied by Bob Twigg and Billy Bishop. note:-
Bob Twigg himself rode his first Trial in 1955 when Jack Rees
(father of Steve who was champion in 88/89) was the champ.
